From Spiritual Capitalism by Peter Ressler and Monika Mitchell Ressler "Roots of Spiritual Capitalism " IN July 2001, we read an article in Fortune magazine called “God and Business” written by the renowned journalist, and author of this book’s foreword, Marc Gunther. It detailed the spiritual practices of various CEOs and how these were included in their business affairs. The story set us on fire. We had been working for some time on a manuscript about business ethics, but had been careful not to shatter what has been called the “last taboo” in business. In business, and Wall Street especially, there is a clear line that separates money from more “personal” matters. Spiritual life and anything having to do with loftier goals rarely enter the business world. After all, business is not personal. For years we followed this belief—hook, line and sinker—like everyone else. Even after Gunther’s article appeared we did not cross that line. Yet this story in a major business publication proved to us that others had the same yearning we did—to find deeper meaning in their work and business lives. It created a new and passionate dialogue between us: “Why would we leave our soul out of business? How could we separate ourselves like that?” Go to next excerpt—"Lesson One: Business is Personal" |
